Evernote Series Episode 2: Your Evernote Email Address

Evernote Series Episode 2: Your Evernote Email Address

Buckle up, because this is going to be a bit of a long one!

Of all the ways I use Evernote, I think I’ve used my Evernote Email address the most. For years it was the quickest way to get things into my Evernote account. Now that Evernote is integrated even more into iOS, I don’t use it as often, but it still keeps my email Inbox tidy!

What does my Evernote email address do?

Your Evernote email address allows you to email things into your Evernote account, plain and simple. I added my Evernote email address to my contacts to make forwarding emails from my Inbox into Evernote super-quick. Emails get forwarded into your default notebook in Evernote unless you indicate otherwise (more on that below).

Where can I find my Evernote email address?

Locating your Evernote email address varies depending on what platform you are using.

  • Windows: Evernote — Tools — Account Info — “Email Notes To”
  • Mac: Evernote — Click on Username — Account Info — below “Email Notes To”
  • iDevice: Evernote — Tap Username — Settings — General — Evernote Email Address
  • Android: Evernote — Tap 3 dots in upper right corner — Settings — Account Info — Scroll to Evernote Email

How can I send the email to a different folder, add tags, or add a reminder?

Changing the destination notebook, adding tags, and adding reminders all happen in the Subject line of the forwarded email. The Subject line will become the title of the note; if you’re also changing the destination notebook and/or adding tags and reminders, make sure you add those things afterthe title of the note, still in the subject line, using the indicators below:

  • @ indicates the destination notebook. If you don’t include this, the email will go to your default notebook. So, if you want to email a note into your Recipes notebook, you follow the title of the note in the subject line with “@Recipes”. This only works for existing notebooks.
  • # indicates tags. If you want to add the tag “meatloaf” to a note, simply add “#meatloaf” after the title of the note in the subject line of the email. This feature also works only for existing tags.
  • ! indicates reminders. Simply adding a “!” at the end of the subject line will set a generic reminder. If you’d like to add a reminder with an alarm, you have two options. One: adding “!tomorrow” will tell Evernote to remind you tomorrow, obviously. Two: adding and “!YYYY/MM/DD” at the end of the subject line, where Y indicates year, M indicates month, and D indicates day, will send you a reminder on that specific date.

What Evernote accounts can use Evernote Email Upload?

Basic Evernote accounts can send a total of five emails using their Evernote Email address to see if they like the service. Plus and Premium accounts can send up to 200 Evernote Email Uploads per day.

Can I add an email to an existing note?

Yes, you can! Make sure the subject line of the email is the same as the title of the existing note and add a “+” at the end of the subject line. Evernote will add the body of the email to the end of the most recent note with the same title.

Can Evernote recognize similar notes and apply the same notebook and tag settings to the forwarded email?

Again, yes, it can! Enable Auto-filling by going to Account Preferences — Personal Settings. Evernote will automatically look for similar notes in your account and apply the same notebook and tag settings to the forwarded email.

Any other tips or tricks?

There are two more tips I can give you:

  1. Use your Evernote email address when subscribing to newsletters online. I’ve done this for newsletters that I know I want to keep and don’t want to forget to read. The newsletters go directly into my Evernote inbox so I don’t miss them or accidentally delete them from my email inbox.  If you don’t want to give out your Evernote email address in that way, which is completely understandable, I’d use #2 below instead.
  2. Use your email client’s filters to automatically forward emails with certain parameters to your Evernote account. You can use your filters to tell your email client to send emails from specific senders or with particular subjects directly to your Evernote email address.

So, that’s your Evernote email address! As always, these are the ways I use mine; I very well may have missed some very cool functionality. If you want the whole picture direct from Evernote, check out this article in Evernote’s Knowledge Base.
